Multifaceted Effects of Resin Use By Honeybees

Michael Simone-Finstrom discusses how bees use propolis and other behavioral defenses to combat parasites and pathogens within the hive.

Honey bees exhibit a number of different defenses against disease.  Their use of propolis is an interesting way bees help protect their colonies.  An overview of the role of propolis in colony health and productivity is presented in the talk.  Recent work including evaluation of hive boxes that promote the use of propolis by honey bees in commercial beekeeping operations is discussed, showing the potential function of increased propolis in a real-world beekeeping setting.
